Island Sights

What to see on Kefalonia

From sea caves and Venetian castles to Mycenaean tombs and the world-famous beach at Myrtos.

01

Agios Georgios Castle

The medieval castle rises on a hill some 320 m high above the village of Peratata, five kilometres south of Argostoli. Likely built by the Byzantines, it guarded the island’s old capital, which stood here until 1757.

02

Agios Gerasimos Monastery

Agios Gerasimos is the patron saint of the island. His monastery, in the Omala valley, draws crowds of pilgrims on his feast days — 16 August and 20 October.

03

Archaeological Museum

In the heart of Argostoli, the museum gathers the island’s antiquity — finds from prehistoric, Mycenaean and Roman times, including the Mycenaean tombs of Mazarakata and Metaxata.

04

Assos Castle

The focal point of the Assos peninsula, built by the Venetians in the late 16th century to shelter the island’s people from pirate raids. Part of the walls and the arched gate still stand.

05

Drogarati Cave

A few kilometres from the port of Sami, this cave of stalactites is 45 m wide, 21 m deep and 9 m high — celebrated for its remarkable acoustics.

06

Korgialenio Historical & Folk Museum

In the centre of Argostoli, founded in 1966, the museum displays the costumes, furniture and embroidery of old Kefalonia.

07

Mycenaean Tombs — Mazarakata

Significant tombs that testify to an important Mycenaean settlement; the excavations yielded jewellery of Mycenaean art.

08

Melissani Cave

Near Sami, one of the island’s great wonders — a cave 40 m wide and 36 m high, partly open to the sky, its floor flooded by a lake 20–30 m deep, lit electric blue at midday.

09

Myrtos Beach

Indisputably one of the most beautiful beaches in Greece, and among the finest in the world. White shore meets sea in every shade of blue; the view from the road high above is simply unmatched.

10

Roman Villa — Skala

In the ruins of a Roman villa at Skala, beautifully preserved mosaics dating to the 3rd century AD.

11

Tzannata — Vaulted Tomb

The largest vaulted tomb ever found in western Greece. Its unique finds — jewellery and a seal — point to a significant Mycenaean centre.
